Where can professional or advanced artists go for genuine advice, critiques and help to improve their conceptualisation, painting style and technical skills – and who can help them with their business planning and stategy as an artist ?

This unique workshop series is aimed at doing precisely these things – we will give ambitious experienced painters an opportunity to present their work for critique by both peers and the programme leader, to evaluate and develop their painting vision, style, skills and techniques, and hopefully achieve significantly better results with their paintings, and improved business success as artists.

There will also be time for group and one-to-one mentoring sessions – including how to get the most from the business side of being an artist.  Between monthly workshops, participants will be given suggested (optional) projects  – aimed at broadening horizons, raising expectations about their own work and perhaps putting their artistic careers on a more professional basis.

Tuition, practical demonstrations and group session, project work and other development processes will vary depending on participants’ needs, sharing my years of professional experience on topics  such as colour theory and practice, composition and design, painting processes, glazing, scumbling, Flemish techniques, painting styles from abstract to realist, etc.

We may also cover traditional canvas preparation techniques that can save artist significant costs.

In regard to the career side of the programme, topics covered may include business planning, gallery network development, CV development, web based issues such as website development, online advertising, client mailing lists and finally personal skills such as time management, developing  priorities etc

The course structure is however flexible and suggestions from the participants will guide the ongoing design and content.

Based on a previous successful two-year course for professional artists, this shorter course will challenge, inspire and encourage artists who genuinely wish for objective feedback, and who see being a painter as a life-long developmental journey.  Among other things, its design will give participants a practical self-critiquing checklist for their own paintings, and will facilitate enduring peer-peer contact and support beyond the period of the programme.

Some Approaches & Topics we'll cover over the six Mondays

This workshop will look at painting in an advanced way - I will assume you know all the  basics of painting, but you're keen to improve - radically.

Each month, you'll bring one or more paintings you've done for objective critiques - using a valuable framework I'll share with you - your Personal Vision, the Four Essential Principles and Nine Design Elements.  How you envision your subject, and interpret these principles, and use the design elements in your painting practice will shape your painting style and results.

Subsequent workshops will focus on Composition, Colour, Drawing, Painting Techniques (including a brief examination and practice of Old Masters' techniques), and Finishing with maximum Impact.

In between workshops, I'll encourage participants to complete specific painting projects that are likely to take you out of your comfort zone, but you'll be gaining many new insights, discovering new techniques and analysing your work in whole new ways.  These projects are optional, but doing them will reinforce the learning from the previous workshops.

Are you ambitious enough?
I will be aiming to help participants achieve gallery-quality, exhibition-quality work throughout the workshop, and giving them a really practical and comprehensive analytical framework by which to judge all their own paintings by gallery standards.

This workshop is ideal for artists with this level of ambition, desire and commitment; it's just six one-day workshops, on six Mondays over six months from May til October, at my studio in Cross, Co. Mayo.

We'll start at 10.30 each day to allow participants to travel to Cross without the need for overnight accommodation costs, and we'll finish about 5.00 pm each day.  My studio is close to Cong village - a hugely popular tourist village, with Ashford Castle, lakes, mountains, walks and beautiful countryside all around - should you decide to overnight on occasion.

The fee for the six-day workshop series is 875 euro, including a light lunch each day.

The dates are all Mondays as follows:

May 8th, June 19th, July 24th, August 28th, September 11th, finishing October 16th.

Is the workshop right for you?

I try to guide participants to those workshops that will most benefit them, based on their experience.  This helps to ensure participants on any given workshop are within a similar range of ability.

My Approach to Teaching: On all my workshops,  apart from any group tuition/demonstrations, I give one-to-one advice each day based on each participant’s particular level of ability and improvement.  I try to ensure all participants enjoy my workshops, and I will help each participant to challenge themselves to improve their understanding and skill during the workshop.  We do all this within a relaxed friendly non-critical approach.

Experienced/Advanced/Professional:  You have painted for many years, possibly have a Fine Art degree and you have the potential to earn some or all of your income from your artwork. Your work is generally of exhibition standard but you still want to improve.  Like most artists, you work alone and could benefit from regular, objective, experienced mentoring and/or peer advice.  You may have experienced difficulties establishing or developing your gallery network and feel the business side of your career needs more focus.  Maybe use of the internet, website development and online advertising is something you need. Perhaps you could benefit from better time management and overall planning of your days/weeks and years.

This range of issues is typical of semi-professional/professional artists – and I have helped many such artists with these issues on my workshops.  I will listen to what you are seeking, I will challenge your thinking, point out any weaknesses I see and suggest specific  new ways to approach your work, your career planning and your time management in order to achieve your goals.

Note: This workshop series will not be suitable for artists who have not yet become experienced/advanced/semi-professional or fulltime professional artists.

It is only suitable for artists who paint as their preferred medium (as against sculpture, performance, installations etc)
