Introduction to Portrait Painting

Step by Step

3 Day workshop

Tues 1st   - Thurs 3rd September, 2020

Where:  My Studio, just outside the village of Cross, south Co. Mayo

Outline: This workshop is for artists who would like to try, or improve, their portrait painting skills.  All the key issues will be covered using live models and easy to follow demonstrations will be given each day as well as one-to-one guidance throughout.

And my studio is a short drive from Cong village, Ashford Castle and the beautiful lakes of Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, the nearby hills/mountains leading to Connemara - plenty of evening walks, or just chill out in friendly pubs/restaurants nearby.  A lovely mid-week break while getting lots of tuition and support in portrait painting.

For Intermediate, Experienced or Advanced painters

Most artists think portraits are too hard to even try. It's not true. Faces and heads are essentially just shapes with colour and tone applied. I'll share with you my few simple ways to achieve accurate drawing so your sitter will have a good likeness. I'll explain tone and colour and how it affects creating a three dimensional head that is believable.

We'll practice a set of simple exercises that will reveal how to analyse and approach a portrait so it's in straightforward steps that you too can master. I'll show you the key skills you need to capture a good likeness, and you'll practice these skills over the three days. You'll be surprised how well you improve and it will give you the confidence to paint family, friends and maybe even commissions.

We'll cover the specific steps to take in building up a portrait, and I'll do specific demonstrations on how to paint eyes, nose, mouth and ears. You'll learn how to mix natural skin colours and how to paint skin in shadow.  How to light the sitter and how to pose them will also be covered in this really interesting workshop.

It's a great feeling to 'reveal' a human face on canvas, so why not give yourself the chance to really get to grips with this wonderful genre of painting.

These workshops were overbooked when I ran them previously in Dublin and elsewhere - places are strictly limited on this one due to having live models, so contact me early to avoid disappointment.
