John Dinan, Artist and Teacher

I'm a professional artist, working and living in the beautiful West of Ireland.

Most of the year I paint either in my studio or 'en plein air' - outdoors in all the elements.

In addition, I run a series of painting classes, art workshops or painting lessons - call them what you will -  in order to share my experience with others. You'll find details of these on this site.  I have also been asked to run workshops at the annual Wexford Plein Air painting festival and the Dublin Plein Air painting festival - both of which are great occasions for outdoor painters of every ability level - from beginners to professional.

I studied painting on various evening courses at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in the Seventies, as well as with Henry Healy RHA, the late renowned landscape artist and teacher. It is through Healy that I first met my colleagues in Back Lane Painters - they were all Healy's students. I have painted and exhibited with them now for over thirty years.

I have had solo, shared and countless group exhibitions, and am one of the exhibitors in many major Irish galleries. I have exhibited in the main Irish annual exhibitions, the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Oireachtas exhibitions.

I am a founder member of The Portmarnock Art Group, and a member of the Dublin Painting and Sketching Club.

As an Art teacher, my approach is to have a relaxed informal atmosphere in my workshops, where participants feel at ease - to relax, to learn, to ask any questions they like - I don't believe in holding back painting information or 'secret tricks of the trade'.  I try to help my students achieve accelerated learning - to get as far along the path of painting progress in as quick a time as possible.  I try to give insights and demonstrations that are practical and make sense, and give a fuller understanding of what 'good painting' is all about.

I try to offer some different workshops each year along with my most popular ones, so my many loyal supporters can expand their learning experiences. This year, I'm running three interesting workshops in Mohill, Co. Leitrim in co-operation with my son Barry, who has bought and runs an independent artists' studios and residence in an old converted convent in the town.

I hope you might see a workshop that appeals to you in this year's programme, and I look forward to painting with you.
